Diabe Care – Mission 01

DIABECARE – Mission 01 was conducted on 27th August 2026, from 6.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. at Swarnapali Elders Home, Horana. The programme was organized with the aim of promoting health awareness while also spending meaningful time with the elderly residents and supporting their daily needs.

The programme began with the registration and coordination of the participants and residents. The initial stage focused on basic health screening, where the grandparents underwent blood sugar and blood pressure checks with the support of the healthcare team. The results were monitored and necessary guidance was provided to the participants based on their health conditions. Following the health check-up, a diabetes awareness session was conducted, covering important areas such as diabetes prevention, risk factors, healthy lifestyle practices, regular health monitoring, and the importance of seeking appropriate medical advice and follow-up care. The session also gave the grandparents an opportunity to ask questions and discuss their health-related concerns with the healthcare team.

After completing the health screening and awareness activities, the Leo volunteers spent time with the grandparents and supported them with their daily activities and work at the elders’ home. Volunteers helped with various tasks around the premises and assisted the staff and residents where needed. In addition to providing practical support, the volunteers engaged in friendly conversations with the grandparents, listened to their stories and experiences, and spent quality time with them. This created a warm and comfortable atmosphere and helped strengthen the connection between the volunteers and the elderly residents.

Throughout the programme, Leo volunteers worked closely with the healthcare team to assist with the smooth coordination of the health screening, guide the grandparents between activities, and provide support whenever required. The Leo Club of Piliyandala also contributed to the successful coordination and implementation of the mission. The programme concluded after completing the health-related activities, volunteer support, and interactions with the grandparents, leaving the participants with both valuable health knowledge and meaningful social connections. Overall, DIABECARE – Mission 01 provided a combination of health screening, awareness, community service, and companionship for the elderly residents.
